Import from Splitwise to SnapSplit

By SnapSplit · Updated

Export your Splitwise group as a CSV, create a SnapSplit group, and invite its members. Then open the group's Data tab to preview the file, match names, and import supported entries. Keep splitting expenses with no daily entry cap.

Have your export ready?

Open your groups if you already have an account. Create the destination group, invite the people in the CSV, and wait for them to join. As the group administrator, use the edit button beside the group name, then choose Data. Your file is uploaded inside that group.

Before moving, save the old group's balances by currency and agree on a cutover date. Finish pending purchases and repayments in the old ledger so everyone starts from the same numbers.

1. Export a spreadsheet from Splitwise

On Splitwise's website, open the group, select the settings icon, and choose Export as spreadsheet. In the mobile app, open the group, scroll right along its horizontal header menu, and select Export.

These steps follow Splitwise's official export instructions, checked September 7, 2026. Use the group CSV file and keep an untouched copy. A JSON account backup is a different format and cannot be uploaded to this importer.

2. Match the people in your group

In the Data tab, find Splitwise CSV migration, choose the CSV, and select Preview import. Match each participant name to a different current group member. Suggested matches are a starting point; check each one before continuing.

If a person is missing, invite them to the group and finish mapping after they join. Select Refresh preview after changing a mapping. A currency mapping changes the currency label only: it does not convert an amount. Use it only for another code that represents the same currency.

3. Resolve the preview before importing

Check ready rows, duplicates, ignored deleted rows, and any errors. The preview shows totals by currency and a sample of the first 20 parsed rows. Resolve every error before importing; the import button stays disabled while errors remain.

  • Missing participant: Match every CSV name to a current group member. Two names cannot map to the same member.
  • Unsupported currency: Confirm the source currency. Do not relabel a foreign-currency amount as USD to clear an error.
  • More than one payer or unbalanced shares: The importer requires one identifiable payer and participant balance impacts that reconcile. Keep the original record and resolve the row, or use agreed opening balances.
  • Duplicate: Matching imported entries in this group and repeated matching rows in the file are skipped. Check genuinely separate but identical purchases against the source ledger.
  • File too large: The current limits are 2,000 data rows and 1,000,000 characters per file. Use a smaller complete export or start from agreed opening balances.

Supported rows include expenses, refunds, and payment or settlement rows the parser can identify. CSV migration does not transfer receipt images, comments, or recurring schedules. Recreate the fixed bills you want to repeat after your balances are checked.

4. Import, then compare every balance

Confirm the import once the preview is clear. Compare each member's balance in each currency with the old group's saved balance. A total amount imported is not enough to confirm who owes whom. Resolve any difference before recording new expenses or repayments.

Once the group agrees, add new purchases only in SnapSplit from the cutover date onward. Keep the original CSV for reference. You can download your SnapSplit ledger using Export complete CSVin the same Data tab.

Skip the history and carry over what is owed

If Leo owes Maya $60 and Noor owes Maya $30, agree on those balances and record the two debtor-to-creditor amounts with the opening-balance tool in Data settings. Then start new purchases in SnapSplit. Importing those old purchases as well would count the debt twice.

Start your free SnapSplit group and choose the migration method that fits your records.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my Splitwise group for free?

Yes. CSV import is available to SnapSplit group administrators on the free plan. You can use up to 3 groups free, with unlimited expense entries. Pro unlocks unlimited groups.

Do my friends need to join before I import?

Yes. Every participant column in the CSV must map to a different current member of the SnapSplit group. Invite them and wait for them to join before completing the mapping. You must be a group administrator to use the Data tab.

Which Splitwise files can I upload?

Use a group CSV spreadsheet, not a JSON account backup. The importer accepts up to 2,000 data rows and requires Date, Description, Cost, Currency, and at least two participant columns. The preview identifies rows that cannot be imported.

Does importing convert currencies?

No. Currency mapping identifies a currency code; it does not change amounts or apply an exchange rate. Map only equivalent codes for the same currency, and compare final balances separately for each currency.

What if my export cannot be imported?

Resolve the errors shown in the preview, or start with agreed outstanding balances using the opening-balance tool in Data settings. Keep the old ledger for reference. Do not also import the old expenses represented by those opening balances.
